DJ FOOD
KALEIDOSCOPE
NINJA TUNE
DJ Food is one of the Cadillacs of the Ninja Tune
label. This band combines "found sounds" and other samples with electronica
wizardry to create some of the hippest down-tempo grooves on the market.
With Kaleidoscope, the band's stock keeps rising. On "Break,"
the band mixes pool table sounds with a sample from Lighnin' Rod's "Hustlers
of Convention." "The Aging Young Rebel" is centered around the spoken-word
vocals of jazz-hipster Ken Nordine--this album defines "electronica-cool."
Kaleidoscope also provides a nice introduction to the Ninja Tune
sound. If you like what you hear, Sowbug Stew highly recommends exploring
other artists on this label (e.g., Amon Tobin; Up, Bustle and Out; Kid
Koala; The Herbaliser; DJ Vadim).
PIGEONHOLE: Down-tempo electronica that oozes
"cool" from every pore.
CAVEATS: Kaleidoscope is mostly instrumental--if
you're heavily dependent on lyrics/vocals, you may want avoid this one.
