MEAT PUPPETS
UP ON THE SUN (REISSUE)
RYKO

Kurt Cobain did many great things for rock and roll.  One of his lesser-touted feats was putting the spotlight on bands like the Meat Puppets who influenced Cobain's own music.  The Meat Puppets' stock hit the roof in 1994 after their appearance on Nirvana's Unplugged in New York album.  Thanks to Cobain's efforts and the good folks at the Ryko label, the Meat Puppets catalogue got a much-needed facelift in 1999.  One of the crown jewels of the catalogue is 1985's Up On the Sun, a post-punk masterpiece where folk and funk are weaved into a novel mix.  Ryko also sweetens the pot on the reissue by including five bonus tracks. Up On the Sun is a good place for the neophyte to start, and if the Meat Puppets are your musical "thing," make sure you check out the Meat Puppets II reissue.

PIGEONHOLE: DIY post-punk, where folk and funk are weaved into a unique mix.
CAVEATS: The stoner-sounding and often off-key vocals may be painful for the uninitiated.
