MOUSE ON MARS
NIUN NIGGUNG
THRILL JOCKEY

More and more indie rock bands these days seem to be taking the instrumental route--leaving the words behind to experiment with sounds.  It's unfortunate that so many of these bands are falling into one of two self-indulgent ruts: moody guitar wanking or boring ambient ramblings.  Mouse On Mars' approach, however, is completely different.  These guys avoid the ruts by starting off on a completely different musical planet.  On Niun Niggung, Mouse On Mars creates catchy instrumentals with rhythms driven by some of the oddest electronic sounds ever burned on CD.  On tracks like "Dowload Sofist," electronic bleeps and bloops mingle with horns and acoustic guitar to create unique aural textures.  Many songs, like "Gogonal" and "Distroia," sound like techno that's still trying to escape the machine.  Niun Niggung is space-age dance music for only the hippest robots.

PIGEONHOLE: Some of the most interesting electronica released in recent years.
CAVEATS: This stuff originates from a completely different musical planet--xenophobes need not tune in.
