NEU!
NEU! (REISSUE)
ASTRALWERKS

Neu! was formed by Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother when the two left Kraftwerk in 1971.  Neu! released several albums during the '70s that have been almost impossible to find in recent years.  Last year, the Astralwerks label picked up the ball and reissued Neu!, Neu! 2, and Neu! '75.  The music on the band's self-titled debut is similar to early Kraftwerk and Organisation.  Neu! is a hypnotic mix of upbeat instrumental jams (e.g., "Hallogallo," "Negativland") and ambient works (e.g., "Sonderangebot," "Im Gluck").  The only stinker is "Lieber Honig," where Neu! tries to sing.  And I use the word "sing" very loosely--the vocals on this track sound like a drunk German who can't quite get the words out.  This one transgression aside, Neu! is a great album.  Anyone with an interest in Krautrock should check out this CD (and if you like it, also give the Neu! '75 reissue a listen).

PIGEONHOLE: Essential and influential Krautrock finally available at a reasonable price--thank you, Astralwerks!
CAVEATS: For those unfamiliar with Krautrock, Neu! may not be the best place to start. (Sowbug Stew recommends first giving Can a try.)  Those without a sense of humor will also find the last track, "Lieber Honig," a bit painful.
