JOHN OSWALD & THE GRATEFUL DEAD
GRAYFOLDED (REISSUE)
SNAPPER
John Oswald is a studio magician who developed a technique back in the
'80s called "plunderphonics." The technique involves taking apart
the songs of other artists, adding effects, and putting them back together
in entirely new ways. On Grayfolded, Oswald used this technique
to manipulate 25 years worth of live recordings of the Grateful Dead's
"Dark Star." The result is a stunning two-CD set of "Dark Star" remixes
where solos from 1969 intermingle with solos from 1993 and trippy vocal
tracks appear from "the beyond." The album is magical for those who
have the time and patience to listen to the music unfold. The package
is completed by great liner notes and a map of each track that shows where
different versions of the song overlap. Grayfolded was originally
released in 1996, and this reissue by the Snapper label is a sight for
sore eyes as so many of Oswald's other recordings are hard to find.
PIGEONHOLE: Twenty-five years worth of live "Dark
Star" pulled apart, manipulated, and put back together again as extended/overlapping
jams.
CAVEATS: Some may not have the patience to listen
to this one unfold.
