THE SOFT BOYS
UNDERWATER MOONLIGHT...AND HOW IT GOT THERE (REISSUE)
MATADOR
It seems that psychedelic-pop-revival bands (e.g.,
Beulah, Elf Power, Apples in Stereo) are all over college radio these days.
Along with XTC, Robin Hitchcock and his Soft Boys were instrumental in
laying the groundwork for this retro genre. Originally released in
1980, Underwater Moonlight is the band's greatest achievement.
On this record, the Soft Boys combine psychedelic elements with a punk
edge in classic cuts like "I Wanna Destroy You" and "Underwater Moonlight."
The album is topped off by Robyn Hitchcock's strange, but brilliant, lyrics.
Matador sweetens up this reissue with a second disc containing 17 tracks
from the band's rehearsals for Underwater Moonlight. Matador
also includes all 8 of the bonus tracks released on the 1992 Ryko reissue,
as well as one extra track ("He's a Reptile").
PIGEONHOLE: Groundbreaking music that set the
stage for many of today's psychedelic-pop-revivalists. This release
also includes bonus tracks from the rehearsal sessions for the album.
CAVEATS: If you already have the 1992 Ryko reissue
of this album (which has 8 of the 26 bonus tracks on the Matador version),
it may not be worth the money to buy it again.
