SUN KIL MOON – GHOSTS OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY
JETSET RECORDS
Ever tried to sample a glass of wine with a piece of gum in your mouth? Or tasted orange juice right after brushing your teeth? If so, you know that certain things in life have a context to which they fit perfectly, and others not so much. Music follows a similar suit at times.
Ghosts of the Great Highway hearkens back to the days when the concept of an “album” meant something. In recent years, we as music fans have become mired in a sea of discs laden with two singles and 8 stinkers. The gems are still out there, unfortunately they’re oftentimes difficult to find. Mark Kozelek (formerly with Red House Painters) and his band Sun Kil Moon have put together an album that attempts to defy convention.
Like the perfect bottle of wine paired with a meal, this album will make a rainy night of introspection or a road trip through the countryside come alive. Individual tracks meld together as the band weaves stories of Americana so beautiful you’ll forevermore identify the place you first heard it by the album’s musical accompaniment. Likewise, listening to Ghosts of the Great Highway with its perfectly plucked strings, and the tiny imperfections in Kozelek’s voice when he sings of love lost, homesickness, and the promise of a new future will always remind me of that drive up the Oregon coast on a hazy night so surreal yet so perfect.
PIGEONHOLE: Folky, and Neil Young-ish at times
CAVEATS: This album works best when listened to as a whole, so if you’re in the mood for a quick listen it might not be the best selection.
