VARIOUS ARTISTS
...KING FUNK
ACE
In the mid- to late-'60s, James Brown released
some of the most important funk records ever made on the King record label.
Britain's Ace label has just released a CD featuring some of the other
great artists on King and its subsidiaries (i.e., Federal, De Luxe, Tri-Us,
and People). There are no James Brown tunes on the ...King Funk
compilation, but Brown's influence can be clearly heard on tracks like
Hank Ballard's "Butter Your Popcorn" and James Duncan's "Stand Up and Get
Funky." Other highlights include Over Night Low's "The Witch Doctor,"
the Coaster's "Down Home Girl," and some great cuts from Marie Queenie
Lyons. This is old-school, "deep-cut" funk at it's best.
PIGEONHOLE: Top-notch, "deep-cut" funk from the
King record label and its subsidiaries.
CAVEATS: Although James Brown's influence can
be clearly heard on this disc, the godfather of soul himself does not appear
here. As an import release, this CD may also be a bit pricey, but
it's definitely worth the money if you're into funk.
