STAX OF FUNK
ACE
Back in the early '70s, the Stax label dished
out some the grittiest, booty-shakin' funk ever made. On Stax
of Funk, the British Ace label has reissued some of the best tracks
that Stax ever served up. Funk pioneers like Rufus Thomas, the Bar
Kays, and Black Nasty all show up here. Some of the best tracks,
however, come from more obscure artists like Jean Knight ("Do Me"), The
Sweet Inspirations ("Slipped and Tripped"), Little Sonny ("Eli's Pork Chop"),
and Melvin Van Peebles ("Hoppin' John"). One obvious omission from
the collection is label heavy-weight Isaac Hayes, but you'll never miss
him with all the other goodies that Ace packs onto this CD.
PIGEONHOLE: An excellent collection of gritty,
booty-shakin' funk originally released on the Stax label.
CAVEATS: This is "deep-cut funk," so don't expect
to hear anything that sounds familiar (unless you were into this kind of
music the first time around--circa 1972); As an import release, this
CD may also be a bit pricey, but it's definitely worth the money if you're
into funk.
