SHANNON WRIGHT
FLIGHTSAFETY
QUARTERSTICK
On
her solo debut, Shannon Wright (formerly of the band Crowsdell) captures
the feelings of intense emotional conflict and resolution that most singer-songwriters
strive for but never achieve.
Flightsafety
is a very personal record.
It's written by someone for whom songwriting is about conveying the deep,
bare emotion of the moment the song is created.
Wright's
gift is that her metaphorical language never quite reveals the facts, but
you get the point anyway. Her plaintive and concise writing is translated
perfectly by the sparse instrumentation--acoustic guitar, piano, drums--most
of which Wright plays herself.
With
its honesty, personality, and intimacy, Flightsafety is the kind
of record that endures, regardless of trends in current musical climates.
PIGEONHOLE: A down-to-earth, personal record from an accomplished writer à la
Joni Mitchell or Carole King.
CAVEAT: It may seem a little "same-y" or one-dimensional to some.
