THE
ORIGINAL P
at CAT'S CRADLE
CARRBORO, NC
OCTOBER 6, 2000
Funk pioneers Parliament/Funkadelic are making the rounds on the club circuit
under a new name--The Original P. Although George Clinton isn't on
this tour of duty, the Original P prove that the funk can go on without
their spiritual leader. On October 6th, the band tore the roof off
the Cradle in Chapel Hill.
The Original P hit the stage dressed in their
wacky-1970s-meets-2070s garb. The stage seemed to buckle as the thirteen
band members piled on top of it. The group then ripped through Parliament/Funkadelic
classics like "Tear the Roof Off," "Flashlight," and "Up For the Down Stroke."
Many of these tunes were stretched out into extended jams that went miles
beyond the original studio recordings. The band also played some
George Clinton solo tunes like the crowd-favorite "Atomic Dog." Another
unexpected treat was "Maggot Brain"--an instrumental psychedelic rock-funk
piece from the 1971 Funkadelic album of the same name.
The four original Parliament/Funkadelic members
have fattened up the band's ranks with a young army of supporting musicians.
Although the new guys are amazing musicians, the elder statesmen proved
that they still had the funk as they flexed their stage stamina for the
crowd. One of the old-timers even straddled his microphone stand
like a twenty-year-old Mick Jagger!
The Original P is a spectacle that's well-worth
seeing. You'd have to be dead not to have some sort of viceral response
to the band's music--it's nearly impossible to keep the body still when
bombarded with such fat grooves. And even a dead person would sit
up and take notice of this wacky circus stage-show.
